| EDUCATION OFFICER PROFILE: COLLEEN
CALDWELL |
[Education Officer's
Report May 2005]
|
Our
last Education
Officer was Colleen Caldwell, whom we are, sadly, unable to continue to
employ due to the termination of our funding by MoH as a result of recent cost
cutting exercises.
Colleen holds excellent references and qualifications for
the job. She is highly capable and
professional in all she does. A teacher by profession, Colleen has
presented the burn prevention message in a manner targeted at the age group she is addressing
and designed to inculcate an awareness of accident prevention from the earliest
possible age.
The incidence of preventable burn related accidents can be reduced
significantly when confronted in this way and Waikato Burn Support has offered
the burn prevention programme to schools, groups, organisations and
businesses for many years with results reflected in the statistics of admissions
to Waikato Hospital Burns Unit.
Speaker: To arrange a one-off speaker to your school, community group, service club,
business or organisation please do not hesitate to contact us. We will
arrange a suitable date and time and be there to inform and advise on wise
burn
prevention techniques and first aid measures in the event of a burn
related accident occurring in your home or work place. We can still
offer this facility on an ad hoc basis, though, sadly, as mentioned above, we
are no longer able to offer this as part of our current programme. We do
hope, funding being available, to continue to offer this service in the future.
Other Venues To Which We Provide Speakers
While our Education Officer spends most of her time in schools in the region,
there is always a Board Member
from Waikato Burn Support available to speak at other kinds of
events.
|
We have provided a speaker on the work of Waikato Burn Support and burn
related matters at:
- Company Board Meetings
- Corporate get-togethers and functions
- PTA groups
- Service Clubs such as Lions and Rotary
- Nursing groups
- Polytechnic
- High Schools
- Staff meetings from all kinds of organisations
- In fact anywhere people are!
The old adage continues to hold true, "An
ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure". This is
particularly true when the cost to the state in dollar terms to treat one burn
survivor with only moderate burns can be in excess of $300,000 (quoted
recently on Channel 3's 20/20 programme). Of course, when you factor in
the emotional cost and the disruption to peoples lives that can affect not only
the entire family but others as well, the cost is far higher.
