Our Field Officer's Tasks

  • Hospital Visitation
The primary area of responsibility for our Field Officer is visiting admissions to Ward 7 at Waikato Hospital.  This involves offering our support services, counseling, help and advice to burn survivors when they need it most.

  • Liaison with Hospital Staff
In conjunction with visiting survivors while they are undergoing hospitalisation, we maintain links with hospital staff and medical personnel in order to remain abreast of techniques and nursing procedures so that we can be relevant in offering explanations and counseling to assist survivors to understand what is happening and adjust to what has happened.

  • In Home Support
When the survivor has completed surgery and been released from hospital our Field Officer is on hand to help with "getting back to normal".  This may be a very long process and require lots of help and counseling.  There may also be lots more surgery involved and support from someone who has "been there" can be very helpful.

  • School & Work Re-entry Programmes
As rehabilitation progresses the time comes to return to school or work.  This imposes a whole new set of challenges upon the burn survivor and can often be very traumatic.  Our Field Officer is on hand to help with this and will work with the survivor, caregivers, and teachers and work associates to make this process as successful as possible.

  • Helping Caregivers
There are considerable challenges involved in being effective caregivers for burn survivors and those who are closest often have difficulties adjusting that can be as great as those for the survivor.  We often support, counseling, advice and assistance to help here as well.  Camps, Family Days and other events all provide avenues of assistance for as well and we encourage all survivors, caregivers, family and whanau to participate as much as possible in these activities.

  •  Assisting With The School Education Programme.
In the past our Field Officer used to be responsible for the entire School Education Programme, now however, this has been reduced with the appointment of an Education Officer who does most of this.  However, presently our Field Officer retains responsibility for most of the Kindergartens along with one or two other schools who may specifically ask for her.

  • Other Speaking Engagements
Our Field Officer will accept other speaking engagements from time to time when asked, and whether she is able to respond or not, there will always be somebody from Burn Support available to accept speaking engagements to talk about the work of Burn Support, and, very high on our list of priorities of course, Burn Prevention.

Burn Support Cars
We were very fortunate, with the help of the Lions District 202C, to be able to change our faithful diesel for a station wagon which will allow our Field Officer to carry display boards and gear so much easier.   To view pictures of this beautiful car please click the thumbnail on the right:

ChequeRead all about the presentation of the HUGE cheque on July 3rd 2001, that helped us purchase our Field Officer's latest car, from the Lions District 202C by clicking the picture of the cheque on the left.

These pictures show Trish Ball (Waikato) and Yvonne Skellern, (Bay of Plenty) Burn Support Field Officers, with previous cars.
