RosesA Valentine to Our Co-Survivors
By Delores Gempel Lekowski, Author of "The Hurting Angels"

So much focus is put on the burn patient that we neglect the importance that co-survivors play in our recovery. This is a Valentine for them. Feel free to share it with your co-survivor.

Dear Co-Survivor,

I want you to know how important you were to my survival. You were my lifeline. Without you and God by my side, I wouldn't have made it. Without you as my prayer warrior, the outcome - I am sure - would have been quite different.

Because you held my hand and cried along with me, I was able to endure another day. Your love and support kept me going; I can't imagine how I would have faced this alone.

Everyone tells me how strong and brave I was. What they don't know is that I drew my strength from you, because I didn't have any left in me. You are also where I got my courage. I hung in for yet another day because of the determination I saw in your eyes. Because you wouldn't give up on me, I couldn't give up on myself. There is a special bind that just you and I will share forever.

I can only imagine how this affected your daily life. The long days at the hospital, the stress, the emotional upheaval must have been tremendous. But you never complained and your caring concern, and love never wavered.

Thank you for never giving up on me and for not letting me give up on myself. You were the most important part of my recovery. I will build my life around the lessons and determination you have taught me during this most difficult time in our lives. I am forever grateful to you.

Love,

A Burn Survivor
