Safety Rules With
Electrical Appliances
- Keep power cords from kettles and other appliances away from little children's
hands. Children can reach up and catch hold of a cord and pull a
kettle with boiling water over on themselves.
- Keep power cords away from elements. Some stoves have power
outlets immediately above elements. This is very dangerous as, when
the element gets hot and the cord happens to rest on or close to it, it can
melt or burn through creating a very dangerous situation.
- Check electrical appliances and their cords and plugs from time to time to
make sure they are still safe. Wear and tear does affect cords,
plugs and appliances - and they do not last for ever. Be wise, check
them over from time to time!
- Extension cords and their plugs and sockets can also suffer from wear and
day to day use. Check them regularly and NEVER use a suspicious
looking cord or plug.
- If you SMELL BURNING, stop, switch off all power from the wall and check
it out - you could just be in time to save a dangerous fire from starting!

Bedroom Hazards.
- Smoking in bed is a cause of many fires and consequently of
preventable burn related accidents. Be careful and take care with
stubbing out cigarette buts and DON'T go to sleep with cigarette buts in
your hand or not stubbed out.

Matches &
Cigarette Lighters
- Don't allow children to play with matches and cigarette
lighters. Make sure they are well out of reach of children. If
necessary keep them under lock and key. It's too late to wise after
the event!

Things That Burn:
Water, Flames, Oil, Petrol, etc.
- Learn First Aid for all these kinds of burns. It
is always a good idea to take a First Aid Course in case of accidents.
With hazardous substances the rule is always Safety First; keep them under
lock and key or away from the house if necessary. At the very least
make sure the containers you keep them in are approved and safe for that
type of substance.

Babies & The Bath!
- Parents & Caregivers: Never LEAVE baby in the bath to
answer the phone or the door. Many babies are
burnt (even drowned!) while the parent/caregiver leaves to answer the phone
or door. The baby may manage to fiddle with the hot tap - funny things
do happen! Another child may enter the room while you are out and turn
the hot tap on, or just knock it accidentally. Any distraction is
dangerous - take the baby with you, wrapped up in a towel or ignore the
distraction. Your babies health and safety is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT!
- Never leave the water running while you turn your back to
get the soap or towel. Hot water burns are
very common and often happen in the bath. Be very very careful and
always put the cold water in FIRST! Test the temperature with your
elbow as your hand is not so sensitive to heat.
